A1 Certificate
What is an A1 certificate?
The A1 certificate is an official European document confirming that an employee sent to work in Germany remains insured in the social security system of his or her country, and not in Germany.
The document is mandatory for business trips and temporary work in the EU countries and must be presented during inspections by German supervisory authorities.
Why is the A1 certificate necessary?
The A1 certificate is required for:
- lawful deployment of employees to Germany
- proof of payment of social security contributions in the country of the employer
- avoidance of double social security coverage
- passing the checks by the German authorities (Zoll, Finanzkontrolle Schwarzarbeit)
- protection of the employer and the employee from fines and penalties

What should the employee know?
